No. 1 Sqn RAAF

No. 1 Squadron RAAF, formed on January 16, 1916, is based at RAAF Base Amberley in Queensland.

It first saw action in the Middle East during World War I, flying reconnaissance and bombing missions against Ottoman forces. In World War II, the squadron flew Hudsons, Beauforts, and B-24 Liberators on anti-shipping, patrol, and bombing missions across Southeast Asia, including Malaya and Borneo, and supported key Allied campaigns.

Postwar, No. 1 Squadron flew Canberras during the Malayan Emergency and then returned to strike operations in 1973 with the advanced F-111C, strengthening Australia’s air power. Since 2010, the squadron has flown the F/A-18F Super Hornet, maintaining its role as a leading RAAF strike unit.

Designed to meet the combined requirements of the US Air Force and the US Navy, the F-111 Aardvark was first flown on December 21, 1964. Several versions of the F-111 were developed, but the Navy canceled its version in 1968 leaving the Air Force the F-111's sole US operator. The Aardvark was well ahead of its time, pioneering such technologies as terrain following radar, afterburning turbofans and variable sweep wings. Though it was originally conceived as a multi-role fighter, it was better suited to a role as a long-range attack aircraft. It was armed with air-to surface ordnance and was equipped to carry free-fall nuclear weapons.
