RAN Category Badges

Clearance Divers from the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) are highly trained specialists who deploy in support of a variety of Defence operations. They are experts in underwater search and clearance, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), mine countermeasures and hydrography. With their highly specialised skills, they assist with maritime security operations such as disaster relief, mine clearance and maritime search and recovery.

RAN Clearance Divers are some of the most elite personnel in the military. They must have exceptional physical strength and optimum mental agility to face dangerous challenges, often in hazardous conditions. These challenges include detonating unexploded ordinance (UXO), searching for missing persons or objects, and detecting and disposing of sea mines.

RAN Clearance Divers must also be prepared for operations in a variety of environments including deep sea, shoreline, inland waterways and polar regions. They are often required to work at great depths under extreme pressure and in harsh weather conditions. Through their unique skillset and training, they are able to provide support to the Navy and other Defence operations in areas where few others can.

Clearance Divers from the RAN's Mine Warfare and Clearance Diving Group are highly respected for their courage, professionalism and dedication. Their bravery and determination make them an integral part of Australia’s naval defence force.
