1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment Tie Bar
The 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) holds a distinguished place in the history of the Australian Army. As the first of Australia's regular infantry battalions to be formed after World War II, its establishment in 1945 marked a significant shift in Australia's military strategy, transitioning from a citizen militia to a standing army. Situated in Townsville, Queensland, 1RAR has served with distinction in numerous overseas operations, including the Korean War, the Malayan Emergency, the Vietnam War, and more recent deployments in the Middle East. Upholding the highest traditions of the Australian Army, 1RAR continues to play a crucial role in defending Australia and its interests abroad.
Today, the 1RAR continues to be at the forefront of Australia's defence operations. The battalion’s current focus is on maintaining operational readiness for immediate deployment, in line with Australia's strategic interests. This state of readiness sees the battalion regularly training, conducting exercises, and participating in international peacekeeping missions. Apart from its traditional infantry role, 1RAR has also developed specialist capabilities in amphibious warfare in coordination with the Royal Australian Navy, underlining its ability to adapt to the evolving demands of modern warfare. These endeavours showcase 1RAR's ongoing commitment to serve and defend, adhering to its motto ‘Duty First’.
