The Royal Australian Artillery is an important branch of the Australian Army, and has a long history of providing forces with effective firepower. Established in 1901, the RAA is one of the oldest arms of service within the Army, and today consists of over 8,000 personnel. Their primary role is to provide indirect fire support to ground troops, using a range of modern artillery systems including self-propelled guns, mortars, rocket launchers and field guns. In addition to delivering accurate fire support for the infantry, the RAA also provides air defences and reconnaissance capabilities. The regiment has seen service in conflicts around the world, including both World Wars and recent deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan.
